At ArtSpoon, we’re excited to feature our latest highlighted artist, Matthew Mahler, an abstract painter whose work and teaching philosophy inspire creativity and experimentation. Born and raised in Long Island, New York, Mahler grew up in a household that valued education and discipline, thanks to his parents, both educators. His father, a high school art teacher, and mother, who later became a teacher herself, cultivated Mahler’s creative and disciplined ethos early on.

Growing up, Mahler’s parents set clear expectations around finishing homework and chores before enjoying leisure activities. With limited screen time, Mahler was encouraged to explore outdoor activities and build creative projects like tree houses and forts. This upbringing fostered a deep curiosity that continues to drive his artistic process today. Mahler describes his approach as a series of problems to solve, and his meticulous attention to detail — instilled by his parents — sets his work apart.

Now living in Queens, New York, Mahler balances his studio practice with teaching. As a college professor and art tutor, he helps students develop their portfolios for high school and college applications. He views his studio as a laboratory where he experiments with abstract painting, exploring new ideas and methods. Mahler sees painting as a vital pause in the fast-paced digital world, where slowing down to create art can be a radical act.

Mahler’s work often explores society’s complex relationship with technology. In one project, he invited visitors to contribute to a collaborative installation, demystifying the abstract painting process and making it accessible. This collaborative and inclusive approach is central to Mahler’s mission of creating approachable art that resonates with a wide audience beyond traditional art enthusiasts.
