Harmony of Opposites Acrylic on canvas (2023) 91 X 91 cm

We are thrilled to feature the extraordinary artist Sunyoung Shin, whose captivating works blend the boundaries between contrasting elements. Her “Harmony in Oppositions,” delves into the dynamic interplay of opposing forces, creating a mesmerizing harmony that invites viewers to explore the depths of her artistic vision.

Artist Statement: “Harmony in Oppositions”

“I am fascinated by the ever-changing nature of things. Objects, people, and nature often appear solid on the outside but are fragile within. This tension, akin to fragments striving to become whole, is captivating. To me, art is a process of breaking down the boundaries between opposing elements and finding harmony within them.

Contemporary abstract art has traditionally emphasized non-specific forms, color, and shape, aiming to express the essence beyond visible phenomena. I continue this tradition by portraying the unseen world and the elusive concept of harmony. In my ‘Treasure’ series, I bridge the gap between reality and ideals by incorporating real objects, capturing the traces of life in urban settings. My work features fragments of buildings, landscapes, apartments, roads, concrete, and construction materials, reflecting the creation, destruction, and reassembly processes. These fragments represent the blending of individual and society, past and present, East and West, through the interplay of color and form.”

Exploring Sunyoung Shin’s Art

Sunyoung Shin’s artwork is a journey into the delicate balance between solidity and fragility. Her abstract pieces reveal the hidden tensions within everyday objects, nature, and human existence. The use of acrylic on canvas, acrylic markers, felt pens on Kent paper, and epoxy on canvas brings a unique texture and depth to her work.

Her approach is rooted in the principles of contemporary abstract art but extends beyond by incorporating tangible elements from the real world. This method not only preserves the abstract nature of her work but also grounds it in reality, offering a bridge between the visible and the invisible, the concrete and the ephemeral.

“Treasure” Series

The “Treasure” series is a prime example of Sunyoung Shin’s ability to merge reality with abstraction. By using real objects as motifs, she closes the gap between the ideal and the real. This series captures the remnants of urban life — buildings, landscapes, apartments, roads, concrete, and construction materials. These elements symbolize the creation, destruction, and reconstruction that characterize our existence.

In her art, fragments are more than just pieces; they represent the convergence of individuals and society, past and present, Eastern and Western philosophies. The dynamic interplay of colors — red and blue to signify opposing forces, and green to symbolize their harmony — illustrates her vision of a balanced coexistence.

Thematic Elements in Her Work

Sunyoung Shin’s artwork often features juxtaposed themes such as:

  • Individual and Society: Her pieces reflect the struggle and harmony between personal identity and social constructs.
  • Past and Present: She bridges historical contexts with contemporary settings, creating a timeless dialogue within her work.
  • East and West: By integrating Eastern and Western elements, she highlights the cultural synergy and tension between these philosophies.

Her technique of using varying paint thicknesses, the contrast between swift and slow brushstrokes, and the strategic use of color underscore the thematic dualities in her work. This creates a visual tension that is both captivating and thought-provoking.
